Braves trade idea sends $67 million, 2-time All-Star to MLB powerhouse

The Atlanta Braves have fallen short of expectations this season. With Chris Sale sidelined, the team is still fighting to turn things around and remain in the playoff hunt.

Currently trailing by eight games in the wild card race, Atlanta’s chances of making the postseason are fading. Still, general manager Alex Anthopoulos has indicated he won’t be a seller at the trade deadline. Instead, the Braves may look to make moves that keep their slim playoff hopes alive while also building for 2026.

FanSided’s Mitchell Barbee proposed a trade for Athletics pitcher Luis Severino. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Oakland is eager to move Severino, who signed a three-year, $67 million contract with them this past offseason. With both Sale and Spencer Schwellenbach out indefinitely, Severino could provide much-needed stability to the Braves’ rotation.

“Atlanta hasn’t even named a minor league arm to replace Schwellenbach in the rotation yet,” Barbee wrote. “If Anthopoulos doesn’t act soon, the starting pitching could drag the Braves even further out of contention before the All-Star break.”

While Severino holds a 5.09 ERA overall this season, his numbers are more promising away from home. He owns a 3.04 ERA in eight road starts, though his ERA at Sacramento is a troubling 6.79.

He’s a two-time All-Star with one more guaranteed year on his deal before a player option kicks in. The Braves will need a major turnaround to reach the postseason, and while acquiring Severino could boost their chances, he may ultimately prove to be a valuable piece for the 2026 campaign.
