Major Update for Tulane High Star Power House
Tulane’s Sam Howard Poised to Lead Green Wave Defense This Season
With the departure of linebacker Tyler Grubbs, Tulane’s linebacker group is set to turn to Sam Howard as its new leader.
In his final season with the Green Wave, Grubbs was a standout, recording a team-high 67 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. His presence was a constant challenge for opposing teams. The year prior, in his first season with Tulane, Grubbs had an impressive 85 tackles and three sacks.
Now, with Grubbs out of eligibility, Tulane needs someone to fill his considerable shoes. Fortunately, they have Sam Howard, who is primed to step up. Last season, Howard recorded 63 tackles, ranking second on the team only to Grubbs. He also added 2.5 sacks and an interception. With Grubbs’ mentorship, Howard has developed into a key player in the defense.
Before joining Tulane, Howard had an impressive stint at Austin Peay, where he broke out in 2023 with 105 tackles. After hitting the 100-tackle mark, he decided to transfer to New Orleans to continue his college career with the Green Wave.
In his first season at Tulane, Howard demonstrated his consistency and ability to perform at a high level, solidifying himself as a star on the field. While Tulane also returns linebackers Dickson Agu and Chris Rodgers, Howard’s experience and seniority make him the natural choice to lead this unit moving forward.
Agu and Rodgers remain key contributors to the defense. Agu posted 35 tackles, one sack, and an interception last season and is expected to take his game to the next level. Meanwhile, Rodgers made his mark with 24 tackles and an interception, which he returned for a touchdown in a dominant 71-20 win over UAB.
As Tulane’s defense looks ahead to the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Howard. With heightened expectations, Howard’s track record over the past two seasons suggests he is more than capable of leading the charge and continuing his successful career with the Green Wave.
