Baylor secures a top-40 defender, beating out Texas, LSU, and Texas Tech
This is a major win for Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears. Heading into Thursday, there was growing excitement around Baylor’s 2026 recruiting class. The team had 14 commitments, including just one four-star player, cornerback Jamarion Vincent. However, things took a dramatic turn on Thursday.
Four-star defensive lineman Jamarion Carlton chose Baylor, selecting the Bears over LSU, Texas, and Texas Tech. His decision surprised many, as he had been widely expected to commit to Texas.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 260 pounds, Carlton hails from Temple, Texas, and could make an immediate impact for Aranda’s defense next year. Ranked 39th in the 2026 class and as the No. 4 defensive lineman, Carlton is a major addition.
According to 247Sports’ scouting report, Baylor is getting a highly talented and athletic defensive prospect with significant upside. Carlton has the versatility to play on the edge or bulk up into a traditional defensive lineman, thanks to his impressive frame. During the 2025 Navy All-American Bowl, he displayed quick-twitch athleticism and explosive plays, even against elite competition. Standing over 6’4″ and weighing around 240 pounds, his length and speed are evident both on the field and in his basketball play. Though technically raw, he shows flashes of big-play potential and solid consistency in different scenarios. His speed-to-power ability and point-of-attack strength are already noticeable, and with more experience, his pass-rushing skills should improve. With limited involvement in track and field (including the 100 meters, shot put, and discus), Carlton’s multi-sport background gives him a diverse athletic profile. Overall, he’s seen as a high-ceiling prospect with the potential to make a significant impact and possibly pursue a career in the NFL.
