Deion Sanders Criticizes NIL in College Football: “It Doesn’t Make Sense”
Deion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, shared his thoughts on NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) during Big 12 media day in Frisco, Texas, on Wednesday. Sanders expressed frustration with the current NIL landscape, revealing that he wished college football had a salary cap similar to the NFL.
“I wish there was a cap,” Sanders said. “The top players make this amount, and if you’re not at that level, you know you’re not going to get paid the same. That’s how the NFL works.” He pointed out the issue of players who may not be top-tier talents but are able to secure large NIL deals by transferring to other schools that can offer significant sums of money. “It doesn’t make sense,” he added.
Sanders also emphasized the disparity between schools with large NIL funds and those without, noting how this financial gap puts coaches without strong backing at a serious disadvantage.
He further criticized the current system, suggesting that teams with the biggest financial resources often dominate the College Football Playoff.
“Just look at the playoff teams and how much they’ve spent,” Sanders said. “You’ll understand exactly why they’re there. It’s tough to compete with schools giving $25-30 million to a freshman class. We’re trying to be professional, but you’re going to see the same teams at the end, with maybe one surprise— and the teams that pay the most will be the ones there.”
