Rutgers LB Sam Pilof Announces Medical Retirement from Football

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights received some tough news on Thursday regarding linebacker Sam Pilof, who announced via social media that he will be medically retiring from football.

Although Pilof is stepping away from the field, he plans to stay involved with the program as he works towards completing his degree. He will continue to assist in the weight room with the team.

A 6-foot-3 linebacker from Wisconsin, Pilof had committed to Rutgers over schools like Wisconsin, Penn State, and Iowa State. As a highly-rated three-star prospect, he was expected to contribute significantly to the defense. However, after not seeing action during his freshman year, Pilof was poised to provide depth at linebacker but will now shift to other roles within the team.

The Scarlet Knights have faced several defensive challenges this offseason. Linebacker Mohamed Toure entered the transfer portal and eventually joined Miami after being sidelined last season with a knee injury, opening the door for younger players to step up.

Looking ahead, Dariel Djabome, who led the team in tackles last season, returns, with Moses Walker expected to start alongside him. Sam Robinson and true freshman DJ McClary will provide depth.

Rutgers has built a strong defensive reputation in recent years, and the expectations are high once again for the upcoming season. Robb Smith returns as co-defensive coordinator for his third stint with the team, joining Zach Sparber in overseeing the defense.

The Scarlet Knights will kick off their season on August 28 at SHI Stadium against Ohio.
