Michigan Football LB Target Chooses Bill Belichick and North Carolina Over Wolverines

Michigan football faced another tough blow on Saturday when four-star linebacker Calvin Thomas, a prospect from Cypress, TX, chose North Carolina over the Wolverines and other programs.

Thomas had been on Michigan’s radar, but ultimately decided to play under Bill Belichick at North Carolina. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker is ranked as the 254th-best player in the country and the No. 18 linebacker, according to the Composite rankings.

With Thomas off the board, Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class now only includes former SMU commit Markel Dabney at linebacker. The Wolverines also recently missed out on linebackers Kenneth Goodwin and Brayden Rouse, who both committed to SMU and Tennessee, respectively.

Michigan will now focus on continuing to recruit linebackers like Nick Abrams, Anthony Davis, and DQ Forkpa to strengthen their class. With Ernest Hausmann and Jaishawn Barham departing after this season, securing a few more linebackers in the 2026 cycle has become a priority.
