Mario Lemieux-Led Group Expresses Strong Interest in Purchasing Pittsburgh Penguins
A group led by Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux has revealed it is “very interested” in buying back the Pittsburgh Penguins, according to a report from The Athletic on Monday.
Lemieux, along with former co-owner Ron Burkle and ex-executive David Morehouse, has reportedly notified NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman of their intention to pursue the acquisition of the team from Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which purchased the Penguins from Lemieux’s group in 2021.
While FSG has expressed interest in bringing in additional minority investors—following a disappointing 91.4% ticket sales in the 2024-25 season, the lowest in two decades—it has not publicly shown a desire to sell the franchise.
As of 2024, the Penguins were valued at $1.47 billion, according to Sportico.
Lemieux, 59, is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Penguins and has earned three Hart Trophies along with nine All-Star selections. He remains the franchise’s all-time leader in career points (1,723) and goals (690), with current Penguins star Sidney Crosby trailing him in both categories.
Since FSG’s acquisition, the Penguins have only made one playoff appearance and have missed the postseason in consecutive years, a far cry from their three championships won between 2009 and 2017.
