Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball: NCAA Grants Three Years of Eligibility to Center Antonio Dorn
Virginia Tech men’s basketball received a boost with the NCAA’s decision to grant German center Antonio Dorn three years of eligibility. The 22-year-old, 7-foot-0 prospect, who has spent two seasons in Germany’s pro league, will now have a full opportunity to make an impact in the college game.
Dorn, who previously played with the Bozic Estriche Knights Kirchheim in Germany’s second division, was widely expected to receive only two years of eligibility due to his age and non-traditional route to college basketball. However, in a surprising move, the NCAA has allowed Dorn a five-year eligibility window, which means he can play up to three seasons at Virginia Tech. This ruling gives him the flexibility of taking a redshirt year if needed for development, adjustment, or injury, extending his college career.
This is a major win for both Dorn and Virginia Tech, as it allows the Hokies’ coaching staff more time to develop Dorn’s game and integrate him into their lineup over multiple seasons.
In the 2025 season, Dorn had a strong showing, averaging 9.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in 18.5 minutes per contest. His efficiency was especially impressive, converting 68.6% of his field goal attempts, showcasing his strength around the rim.
Looking ahead to the new season, Dorn will be joining a Virginia Tech frontcourt that is shaping up to be versatile and deep. Returning players like Tobi Lawal provide continuity and athleticism, while Amani Hansberry, a skilled transfer from West Virginia, is expected to contribute right away. Incoming freshman Christian Gurdak further strengthens the frontcourt depth.
Dorn’s addition gives head coach Mike Young even more options in the paint. His size, experience, and scoring ability could make him a key figure, whether as a starter or a valuable backup behind Hansberry. Dorn’s physical presence and potential will certainly add another dimension to the Hokies’ post play as they prepare for the challenges of ACC competition.
