Pirates Reportedly in Trade Talks with Yankees as Deadline Approaches
The Pittsburgh Pirates are reportedly engaging in trade discussions with the New York Yankees ahead of the deadline, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
A list of potential trade targets shared by Heyman includes Pirates starting pitcher Mitch Keller, relievers David Bednar and Dennis Santana, and infielders Ke’Bryan Hayes and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. This aligns with the Yankees’ current needs, as they are seeking a starter, reliever, and infielder to address pitching losses and bolster their lineup. While it’s unclear if the Yankees will be able to secure all of these players, the listed Pirates would be valuable additions.
Keller has drawn interest from several teams, including the New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, and now the Yankees. However, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Noah Hiles, the Mets remain the favorites to acquire him. Hiles noted that while the Cubs are looking at Keller, they consider him a backup option, with the Mets still leading the race for his services.
Hiles also mentioned that the Cubs are eyeing Hayes, though he doesn’t appear to be their top priority, leaving the Yankees with a potential opportunity to acquire him.
Pirates fans, frustrated by another lackluster season, have made their displeasure known by flying a plane over PNC Park calling for owner Bob Nutting to sell the team. The “sell the team” chants echoed once again during a 10-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
Nutting’s reluctance to invest in the team is often cited as a key factor in the Pirates’ struggles. Currently sitting at the bottom of the NL Central with a 39-60 record, fans are hoping for a brighter future, with many hoping that their voices will be heard amid ongoing calls for change.
