Giants Sign Third-Round Draft Pick Trevor Cohen to Bonus Contract
The San Francisco Giants have officially signed their third-round draft pick, Trevor Cohen, as reported by Rutgers Baseball’s social media on Sunday.
A photo was shared showing Cohen, a former star for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, wearing a Giants home jersey while signing his contract. While the team has yet to confirm the signing officially, MLB’s draft signings tracker has not been updated as of now.
As the No. 85 overall pick, Cohen becomes the highest-drafted player to sign with the Giants so far. He was their second pick of the draft, following the loss of their second-round pick as compensation for signing shortstop Willy Adames from Milwaukee, who had received a qualifying offer from his former team.
Cohen’s slot bonus is set at $935,000, with each pick in the first 10 rounds receiving a designated bonus. Players drafted in rounds 11-20 can be signed for up to $150,000 without affecting the team’s bonus pool.
A standout for three years at Rutgers, Cohen posted impressive stats in his final season, slashing .387/.460/.523 with two home runs, 36 RBIs, 24 doubles, and one triple. He set a Big Ten record with 56 hits in conference play and tied the Rutgers single-season doubles record. He was also named to the All-Big Ten second team.
Cohen is the second draft pick to be signed by San Francisco, with fourth-round selection Lorenzo Meola, a shortstop from Stetson, also inking a deal worth $652,200, just shy of his slot value.
The Giants’ first-round pick was Tennessee shortstop Gavin Kilen, selected No. 13 overall, with a slot bonus of $5.52 million. Kilen is a draft-eligible junior, meaning he could return to college if he doesn’t sign. All draft picks must be signed by July 28.
San Francisco’s previous five first-round picks include outfielder James Tibbs III (2024), first baseman Bryce Eldridge (2023), pitcher Reggie Crawford (2022), pitcher Will Bednar (2021), and catcher Patrick Bailey (2020). Tibbs was traded to the Boston Red Sox as part of the deal for slugger Rafael Devers, while Eldridge is still considered a top prospect at Triple-A Sacramento. Crawford is recovering from injuries, and Bednar is playing at Double-A Richmond, while Bailey has secured the starting catcher role for the Giants.
