Rangers Announce Signing of First-Round Pick Gavin Fien

The Texas Rangers officially signed their first-round pick, shortstop Gavin Fien, on Monday, marking the fourth player from their 2025 MLB Draft class to ink a deal.

The terms of the contract were not disclosed, but according to MLB Pipeline’s draft tracker, Fien’s slot bonus was valued at $5.75 million. The Rangers selected him No. 12 overall.

Fien joins three other signed picks: Nebraska pitcher Mason McConnaughey (4th round), TCU pitcher Ben Abeldt (5th round), and Illinois pitcher Julius Sanchez.

A prep star from Great Oak High School in Temecula, California, Fien earned recognition on the summer circuit, though his senior season was marked by some inconsistency. Scouts have speculated that he could develop into a future corner infielder at the major league level.

Fien is the first infielder the Rangers have selected in the first round since 2020. In recent years, the Rangers’ first-round picks have included Stanford catcher Malcolm Moore (2024), Florida outfielder Wyatt Langford (2023), Vanderbilt pitchers Kumar Rocker (2022) and Jack Leiter (2021), and Mississippi State infielder Justin Foscue (2020).

Langford is now the Rangers’ starting left fielder, while Rocker and Leiter are part of the Texas starting rotation. Foscue made his MLB debut last year and has bounced between the majors and minors since. Moore is currently playing at High-A Hub City.

McConnaughey and Abeldt both dealt with injuries during the 2025 season, which contributed to their draft stock falling. Both were draft-eligible juniors but chose to sign and begin their professional careers.

For each of their top-10 round selections, the Rangers have a set slot value, but they can offer contracts above or below that amount. Players selected in the final 10 rounds (11-20) can be signed for up to $150,000 without affecting the team’s overall bonus pool.

The Rangers have until July 28 to sign all of their picks.
