Fran Brown Playfully Calls Out Andrew Luck for Stealing Recruit from Syracuse
Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, known for his candid and unfiltered style, took a playful jab at Stanford’s GM, Andrew Luck, for successfully flipping a recruit who was committed to the Orange. Brown didn’t name names directly, but during a lighthearted moment at Wednesday’s ACC Media Days, he couldn’t resist calling out Luck.
When former coach Mark Richt asked Brown about Syracuse’s GM, Thomas Caporale, Brown responded by referencing Luck, who had recently made an impact in the recruiting world.
“Hey, listen, he did a good job,” Brown said. “He took a commit from us. They went down and met with him, and the kid called me saying, ‘Coach, I just think…’ I said, ‘Where do you want to go?’ He said, ‘Stanford.’ So I told him, ‘Hey man, I’ll holla at you later, dog. Good luck.’ I trust our guy, Tommy Caporale. He does an amazing job.”
Luck, in his new GM role, hasn’t shied away from showing his personality. He even joked about Stanford potentially going after Dabo Swinney as the permanent head coach after this season, signaling he’s already involved in some light-hearted recruiting banter.
Brown, a fierce competitor, will likely have this recruiting battle in the back of his mind as the season goes on, though unfortunately, Syracuse doesn’t face Stanford this year.
In addition to the recruiting banter, Brown shared that he still keeps in touch with former colleagues, including coaches like Will Muschamp from his time at Georgia. However, now that he’s in Year 2 as a head coach, those calls are becoming less frequent.
“I still call Muschamp sometimes, map things out with him, and I’ll reach out to Coach Smart and other guys I’ve worked for,” Brown said. “They don’t pick up the phone as much now, though. When I was working for them, it was all good, but now they don’t want to answer the phone when it’s competition calling. But I appreciate those guys.”
Brown also reflected on how being a head coach has shifted his approach to gathering information. “It’s an information-seeking business,” he said. “The more I learn from everyone, the better. And Coach Belichick probably knows a lot about this—GM roles in the pros are different, but in college, it’s a bit of a different dynamic.”
