Logan Gilbert Shines in Mariners’ 1-0 Shutout Win Over Brewers
The Seattle Mariners needed just a single run to break the Milwaukee Brewers’ 11-game win streak on Tuesday.
In a tense 1-0 victory at T-Mobile Park, the Mariners handed the Brewers their first loss after an impressive stretch, improving to 54-47 on the season. This win placed them five games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West and secured sole possession of the second AL Wild Card spot.
“Great game tonight,” said Seattle manager Dan Wilson after the game. “There was definitely some drama, but overall it was an incredible team effort. Logan Gilbert was fantastic—probably his best performance of the season.”
Gilbert’s outing was arguably a career highlight. He pitched into the sixth inning for the first time since Opening Day, finishing with 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings, allowing only two hits and no walks. His bid for a perfect game lasted until the fifth inning, when a lead-off single from Jackson Chourio broke the streak.
Both Wilson and catcher Cal Raleigh credited Gilbert’s fastball command as the key to his dominance against Milwaukee. By keeping the Brewers’ hitters off balance with precise fastballs, Gilbert was able to set up his secondary pitches, including a splitter (six strikeouts) and slider (three strikeouts), to finish them off.
Gilbert also reached a milestone during the game, recording his 800th career strikeout by fanning Brice Turang in the first inning.
“I felt like I was keeping the ball low, which helped,” Gilbert said. “My fastball command was solid, and Cal had a great game plan. We executed it well, and that made a huge difference.”
The Mariners’ ace outlasted Brewers rookie sensation Jacob Misiorowski, who was limited by a pitch count in his sixth career start. Misiorowski was pulled after 3.2 innings, having thrown 64 pitches and struck out seven Mariners.
Raleigh, who helped guide Gilbert through his longest outing in nearly four months, also provided the game’s only run. In the bottom of the sixth, Raleigh hit a solo home run to right field—his first since the All-Star Break and a career-high 39th of the season.
“I wasn’t trying to hit a homer,” Raleigh said after the game. “I just focused on staying patient. My first at-bat against Misiorowski gave me some confidence, and I was able to make adjustments later on.”
Seattle’s bullpen—Matt Brash, Eduard Bazardo, Gabe Speier, and Andres Munoz—did their part to preserve the shutout. Munoz secured his 22nd save of the season, tying his career-high, though he did walk two and strike out two in a tense ninth inning.
The Mariners will look to claim their third straight series win when they face the Brewers in the rubber match Wednesday at 12:40 p.m. PT. Luis Castillo will take the mound for Seattle, while Quinn Priester will start for Milwaukee.
