Astros GM Dana Brown Says Team’s Trade Deadline Focus is on Offense

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Houston Astros are zeroing in on one key area of improvement: offense.

Despite being plagued by injuries—particularly to their pitching staff—Houston has continued to win games and remain a contender. With star pitchers Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown leading the way, the team has battled through a tough season of rehab assignments and injury setbacks. But with reinforcements on the horizon for the mound, the focus has shifted toward bolstering the offense as the trade deadline nears.

The left side of the infield has been a major concern, with Jeremy Peña and Isaac Paredes currently sidelined, and star slugger Yordan Alvarez still recovering from an injury.

What Astros GM Dana Brown is Saying About the Deadline

Houston GM Dana Brown spoke candidly about the team’s plans for the deadline in a recent conversation with media, including Chandler Rome from The Athletic. While Brown remains open to adding pitching depth, he emphasized that acquiring a bat—specifically a left-handed one—was the team’s top priority.

“If there’s a possibility to get a starter, I’ll take a starter. I’m always in the market for a starter,” Brown stated. “That said, I’m really locked in on the bat. If we can get a bat, it would be really good for this team, particularly a left-handed bat… the priority is getting some more offense.”

Several pitchers, including Cristian Javier, Spencer Arrighetti, Luis Garcia, and J.P. France, are currently on rehab assignments and could soon provide some relief to the Astros’ pitching staff. However, the timelines for the return of key position players are much less certain.

Alvarez’s recovery from a hand issue remains unclear, while Paredes could be out for a significant period due to a hamstring injury. Peña’s return may be sooner, but with the second half of the season underway, Houston will need more offensive firepower to remain competitive and push for a playoff run.

With the deadline looming, it seems Brown’s focus on acquiring a bat could be crucial to the team’s chances, making the Astros one of the key contenders for offensive upgrades as the market heats up.
