Guardians Receive Disappointing Injury Update on Key Player
It appears that Cleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas is still a long way from making a return to the field.
The Guardians had hoped Thomas could provide some stability to their outfield in 2025, following years of offensive struggles from that position. Unfortunately, the veteran has struggled to stay healthy due to multiple injuries.
The primary issue for Thomas this season has been a severe case of plantar fasciitis, and things aren’t looking promising for his recovery. MLB.com’s Jackson Stone reported on Friday that “Stephen Vogt said Lane Thomas met with a doctor and now has a new plan for his ‘complicated case’ of plantar fasciitis. His foot continues to react poorly to treatment, and there’s no expectation he’ll be back in the near future.” 
Thomas first landed on the injured list with the issue on May 30. He made a brief return on July 9, but was placed back on the IL just weeks later on July 6. Since then, he hasn’t seen any game action.
This latest injury update is certainly a blow to the Guardians.
Although Thomas has posted a disappointing .160/.246/.272 batting line with a .518 OPS this season, those numbers don’t reflect his true potential. At 29, Thomas is a proven power hitter at the major league level—exactly the kind of player many teams would love to add to their roster.
He could have been an attractive trade target for contenders, but with his injury continuing to linger, it remains to be seen what, if anything, the Guardians can get in return for him.
