Pirates Prospect’s Season Cut Short Due to Injury
One of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top prospects will miss the remainder of the 2025 season after suffering an injury.
PITTSBURGH — The Pirates’ promising third baseman, Jack Brannigan, has been sidelined since June 13, when he last played for Double-A Altoona. The team placed him on the 7-day injured list on June 14, and later moved him to the season-ending injured list on July 21. 
Todd Tomczyk, the Pirates’ senior director of sports medicine, confirmed that Brannigan is out for the rest of the season after tearing his labrum. He underwent surgery to repair the injury and is expected to make a full recovery in time for next year.
“He consulted with Dr. Meister, who, along with our team physicians Dr. Frank and Dr. DeMeo, confirmed a labral tear that required surgery in his right shoulder,” Tomczyk said. “He has since had the labral repair surgery, and we are confident he will be fully recovered and ready for next season.”
Brannigan, a native of Orland Park, Illinois, just outside Chicago, attended Marist High School, where he excelled both as a batter and a pitcher during his senior year in 2019. He hit .430 with 36 runs, 14 doubles, two triples, three home runs, and also posted a 1.55 ERA with 53 strikeouts as a pitcher.
He chose to attend Notre Dame, following in the footsteps of his father, uncle, and grandfather. Over three seasons with the Fighting Irish, Brannigan posted a .289/.369/.508 slash line with 125 hits, 92 runs, 30 doubles, four triples, 19 home runs, and 86 RBIs in 117 games.
In 2022, he earned Third Team All-American honors from Perfect Game, after hitting .291/.360/.540 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs.
The Pirates selected Brannigan with the 83rd overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, and he has since spent three seasons in the minors.
After playing a brief stint with the Florida Complex League Pirates and 26 games with Single-A Bradenton in 2022, Brannigan posted a .211/.330/.337 slash line with an OPS of .667.
He opened 2023 with Bradenton, where he played in 49 games, slashing .253/.398/.451 with an OPS of .849. He earned a promotion to High-A Greensboro on July 21, where he hit .299/.382/.605 with an OPS of .987 in 38 games.
Brannigan spent all of 2024 with Greensboro, despite missing over a month and a half due to injury. He posted a .238/.344/.490 slash line with an OPS of .834 in 77 games, hitting 18 home runs and driving in 53 RBIs.
In 2025, Brannigan spent the entire season with Double-A Altoona, slashing .225/.329/.358 for an OPS of .687 with 46 hits, eight doubles, five home runs, and 30 RBIs in 204 at-bats.
