Billy Napier Confirms Asa Turner Will Retire After Injury

Florida defensive back Asa Turner, who had a standout career at Washington from 2021-2023, will be stepping away from football due to ongoing injuries. Turner recorded 148 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and six interceptions during his three years with the Huskies, starting in both of their College Football Playoff games in 2023. He was also named an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention in 2022.

However, his career took a difficult turn after transferring to Florida for the 2024 season. Turner suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in the opening game against Miami and has struggled to recover since. Florida head coach Billy Napier gave a heartfelt update on Turner’s situation during a Tuesday press conference.

“Asa’s transitioning out of football,” Napier shared. “He’s dealt with multiple significant injuries during his college career. We met with Asa this morning, and while he was a huge contributor early in the season, the injuries have prevented him from being the same player.”

Napier also expressed his gratitude for Turner’s efforts, saying, “Asa contributed to our team last year, and I’m very thankful for his approach and attitude as a teammate. But he’s reached a point where he won’t be playing anymore.”
