Steelers Add Former Eagles RB Lew Nichols to Backfield
The Pittsburgh Steelers are making a move to bolster their running back group. The team announced the release of veteran Cordarrelle Patterson and the signing of former Philadelphia Eagles running back Lew Nichols. 
Nichols, 23, began his NFL journey as a seventh-round pick for the Green Bay Packers. After his time there, he signed with the Eagles, where he spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons mainly on their practice squad before being cut ahead of this year’s training camp.
A standout at Central Michigan, Nichols was named the 2021 MAC Offensive Player of the Year, following up with the 2020 MAC Offensive Freshman of the Year. During his stellar 2021 season, he rushed for 1,848 yards and 16 touchdowns. Over his college career, he accumulated 3,060 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Now with the Steelers, Nichols will have the chance to compete for a spot on their 53-man roster. With Jaylen Warren, Kaleb Johnson, and Kenneth Gainwell seemingly locked in, Nichols will battle with Trey Sermon and Evan Hull to prove he deserves a spot as the fourth running back.
As for Patterson, he announced his release from the team a day before it was officially made public. Patterson had served as the team’s kick returner and third-string back last season, but averaged just 21.8 yards per return. This year, it’s expected that Gainwell and Roman Wilson will take over kick return duties for the Steelers.
