Hurricanes Linked to Three-Time Norris Winner Erik Karlsson
What’s next for the Carolina Hurricanes?
The team has already had a strong offseason, securing Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake, while adding Nikolaj Ehlers and K’Andre Miller to the roster. However, another big name is emerging in trade rumors: Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson. 
NHL Insider Frank Seravalli shared his thoughts on the potential of a Karlsson move, saying:
“Outside of Carolina… it’s hard to find teams that are a good fit for Erik Karlsson moving forward. Karlsson has made it clear… he wants to join a contender.”
At 35, Karlsson remains one of the most offensive-minded defensemen in the league, posting 11 goals and over 40 assists in each of the past two seasons. While it’s unlikely he’ll replicate his incredible 2022-23 performance, where he recorded 25 goals and 101 points to win his third Norris Trophy, he still offers valuable contributions.
For Carolina, adding Karlsson could bolster their defense, particularly as a right-shot defenseman alongside Jalen Chatfield and Sean Walker, even though they already have a solid left-side core with Jaccob Slavin, Miller, Alexander Nikishin, and Shayne Gostisbehere.
However, Karlsson’s addition might be somewhat redundant, as most of these players are too skilled to sit as the seventh defenseman. The bigger hurdle could be his hefty contract—he’s owed $11.5 million for both this season and next.
Yet, despite his expensive deal and lack of a Stanley Cup, Karlsson could fit well into the Hurricanes’ system, known for its high-paced, man-to-man playstyle. While he’s a defenseman, his offensive presence is akin to adding a second right winger, which could help Carolina in those crucial scoring moments that have plagued them in recent years.
For a move to happen, the Penguins would likely need to retain a significant portion of Karlsson’s salary. Carolina has over $10.5 million in cap space, and if Pittsburgh isn’t willing to absorb part of the contract, it’s possible the Hurricanes could trade a player like Chatfield or Gostisbehere—both unrestricted free agents in 2027—to make the deal work.
