Ameer Abdullah Joins San Francisco 49ers for 11th NFL Season

After spending a decade in the NFL, running back Ameer Abdullah is set to continue his career with the San Francisco 49ers for the upcoming season. With training camps underway across the league, Abdullah had not yet signed with a team until now. According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Abdullah has agreed to a contract with the 49ers, moving further west to join the NFC West powerhouse.

Abdullah, who has played for the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, and the Las Vegas Raiders over his 10-year career, has appeared in 141 games. He has accumulated 1,994 rushing yards, eight touchdowns, and 203 receptions for 1,468 yards and 11 more scores. His total yards from scrimmage amount to 3,462, with 19 touchdowns overall.

While most of Abdullah’s early career success came in his first few seasons, particularly after being selected in the second round by the Lions, he had his most productive year in 2024 with the Raiders. He totaled 572 yards from scrimmage, including 311 rushing yards and 261 receiving yards, along with five touchdowns. Despite his solid contributions to both offense and special teams, Abdullah was not re-signed by the Raiders as they underwent a shift in leadership with new hires at general manager and head coach.

For the 49ers, this signing strengthens the running back position. Christian McCaffrey, when healthy, is one of the league’s top backs, but his injury history has raised concerns, with him playing in only four games last season. As a result, the 49ers have been investing in young running backs like Isaac Guerendo and Jordan James in recent drafts, making Abdullah an important veteran addition to provide depth and reliability.

Although Abdullah has primarily been a reserve throughout his career, he has carved out a valuable role in the NFL, and now, as part of the 49ers, he’ll look to continue contributing in a backup capacity for San Francisco’s backfield.
