TeRah Edwards Shines in NFL Preseason Debut with Chargers

TeRah Edwards, a rookie defensive lineman for the San Diego Chargers, made an immediate impact in his NFL preseason debut, recording a sack during Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game.

The 2025 NFL season unofficially kicked off in Canton, Ohio, with the Chargers dominating the Detroit Lions 34-7. While the game might have seemed like just another early preseason matchup to many, Illinois football fans knew there was something to watch: Edwards, an undrafted rookie and former Illinois player, was vying for a spot on the Chargers’ roster.

Though Edwards didn’t play extensively, he made the most of his limited time. Entering the game with the Chargers’ third-team defense, he finished with two tackles, a quarterback hit, and, most notably, a sack.

Edwards signed with the Chargers after a standout college career at Illinois, where he totaled 65 tackles, four sacks, and 7.5 tackles for loss over three seasons.

Whether or not Edwards secures a spot with the Chargers, he can proudly say he recorded a sack in his very first NFL game. While for some players this might be their only shot at NFL action, Edwards’ solid performance suggests he’s likely to see more time in the upcoming preseason games, with a strong chance to stay on the roster at least through the preseason. It was an impressive moment for him, and he capitalized when given the opportunity.
