Blazers Make Big Call on Key Frontcourt Player

The Portland Trail Blazers have decided to make Duop Reath part of their future plans. As they reshape their roster with an eye on upcoming playoff runs, they remain confident in their young core and are now focusing on rounding out the roster with complementary pieces.

Currently, the Blazers have four centers competing for playing time, but Reath has been the least talked-about option. Despite this, Portland has made a significant move by guaranteeing his contract for the upcoming season, signaling their commitment to him—though he still faces stiff competition for minutes. With players like young big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, along with All-Defensive Team member Robert Williams III (who has a history of injuries), Reath’s path to major minutes could be challenging.

The Blazers are looking for players like Reath: cost-effective, capable, and with potential to grow. Reath’s ability to stretch the floor at center is a unique asset that neither Williams nor Clingan brings to the table.

Additionally, Reath’s constant hustle and effort on the court have earned him respect, particularly from head coach Chauncey Billups. However, he will have to fight for backup center minutes against Hansen, and there’s still the possibility that Portland could move Williams’ expiring contract.

Reath benefits from the security of his guaranteed salary for the season, which could allow him to play with more freedom. The Blazers are committed to ensuring the right players get the right minutes at center, so Reath will need a strong training camp to secure consistent playing time.

If injuries arise, as they did last season, Reath will likely get more opportunities. Portland trusts him and doesn’t treat him like an inexperienced player.

Last season, Reath averaged 4.2 points, 2 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game, shooting 42.2% from the field and 32.1% from beyond the arc.
