Royals Reunite with 3-Year Kansas City Veteran After White Sox Release
The Kansas City Royals are looking to bolster their pitching depth, which has taken a hit this summer, and are making moves to add more arms to their roster. 
At the trade deadline, the Royals brought in Ryan Bergert and Stephen Kolek from the San Diego Padres and Bailey Falter from the Pittsburgh Pirates to strengthen their starting rotation. However, the team is still searching for additional pitching options, leading to a signing on Tuesday.
According to MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco, the Royals have signed Jonathan Heasley to a minor-league contract. Heasley, who was released by the Chicago White Sox in March, hasn’t pitched since then. The 28-year-old had a solid run with the Royals from 2021 to 2023, appearing in 36 games.
Heasley has accumulated 139 major league innings, including 21 starts for the Royals’ rotation in 2022. His career ERA sits at 5.89, primarily from his time with Kansas City, though he also made a brief appearance with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024.
Though Heasley has not been particularly dominant in Triple-A, he could prove to be a valuable addition if the Royals can help him rediscover something effective in his pitching repertoire. With Kansas City’s reputation for developing pitchers, there’s potential for Heasley to find success once again.
Originally a 13th-round pick by the Royals in 2018, Heasley returns to the organization in hopes of reviving his career. He will report to Triple-A Omaha to continue his journey.
