Steelers Miss Out on WR Keenan Allen, Who Joins Chargers

The Pittsburgh Steelers were eyeing a potential veteran wide receiver to strengthen their receiving corps, but they missed out as the Los Angeles Chargers secured that player.

The Chargers announced they reached an agreement with Keenan Allen on a one-year, $8.52 million deal, as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Allen’s Career Overview
Keenan Allen spent 11 seasons with the Chargers, including their final four years in San Diego (2013-16) and the first seven in Los Angeles (2017-23). Drafted by the Chargers in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft (76th overall) out of Cal, Allen started 134 of 139 games, recording 904 receptions, 10,530 yards, an average of 11.6 yards per reception, and 59 touchdowns.

He ranks as one of the top receivers in Chargers history, sitting second in receptions and receiving yards and third in receiving touchdowns. His honors include PFWA All-Rookie Team (2013), six Pro Bowl selections (2017-21, 2023), and NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2017 after recovering from an ACL injury. In that year, he posted a career-high 1,393 yards and six touchdowns on 102 catches.

However, on March 14, 2024, the Chargers traded Allen to the Chicago Bears for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. In 2023, he finished with 70 catches, 774 yards, and six touchdowns.

Interest from Steelers
Allen had previously mentioned on a TikTok stream that he was interested in playing for the Steelers, though he seemed to lean more towards a reunion with the Chargers. He said, “There’s two sides to the story. I mean, A-Rod being a quarterback, of course that interests you. But Pittsburgh? No. But hey, you never know.”

Steelers’ Moves
The Steelers had a busy offseason, acquiring DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and several pick swaps. They also signed Metcalf to a five-year, $150 million extension.

In addition, Pittsburgh bolstered their wide receiver group with the signings of Robert Woods (one-year, $2 million deal), and they have receivers like Roman Wilson, Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, and Ben Skowronek on the roster.
