Georgetown Hoyas, Ed Cooley Among Finalists for Five-Star Recruit

While the Georgetown Hoyas have spent several years near the bottom of the BIG EAST standings, the program appears to be on the rise under head coach Ed Cooley, entering his third season in charge.

Georgetown showed promising signs of competitiveness last season, and a commitment from a top recruit could be the catalyst to help restore this storied program to its former glory.

The Hoyas are currently in the running to land one of the best shooting guards in the 2026 class, five-star recruit Jordan Smith Jr. A rising senior at Paul VI Catholic in Virginia, Smith has narrowed his choices down to six schools, with Georgetown making the cut alongside Arkansas, Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, and Syracuse.

Smith is ranked as the No. 4 overall player and the No. 1 shooting guard in the 2026 class. Securing his commitment would be a game-changer for Georgetown, potentially revitalizing the program.

College basketball reporter Joe Tipton mentioned that Smith made an “unofficial visit” to Georgetown recently.

An athletic and versatile guard, Smith excels at driving to the basket, and his long wingspan gives him considerable potential as a defender at the next level. However, he still needs to improve his shooting consistency, as he only made 25 percent of his three-point attempts last season.

In a recent interview with Rivals, Smith explained why Georgetown is among his top choices.

“I love Ed Cooley, the way he recruits me, the way he visits,” Smith said. “I visit there sometimes, and he was in Switzerland (for USA Basketball) with us. Got to spend some time with him there, so it was really nice. Just the opportunity, whatever opportunity stands in front of me to be able to get to where I want to go.”

In today’s NIL landscape, recruiting requires a personal touch, and it seems that Smith appreciates the effort Cooley has made to build a genuine relationship with him throughout the process.

Georgetown posted an 18-16 record last season, marking their first winning season since 2018-19 when the team went 19-14 under former coach Patrick Ewing.

With Cooley continuing to build momentum, adding a talent like Smith could be a major step toward Georgetown’s bright future.
