Chargers Eyeing Another Playmaker for Justin Herbert
The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly eyeing another dynamic weapon to pair with quarterback Justin Herbert. While they’ve already secured the return of Keenan Allen, could the Chargers be preparing to add another top-tier wide receiver to their arsenal in 2026?
Though it may not happen this season, the Chargers might be positioning themselves to target a big name in the near future. In a recent piece by Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine, each NFL team’s major needs heading into the season were highlighted, and for the Chargers, wide receiver was listed as a key concern for the team.
Ballentine also identified one free agent target for each team in 2026, and for Los Angeles, he linked Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Mike Evans as a potential addition. “Even if [Tre] Harris proves to be a solution, adding another veteran next year wouldn’t hurt,” Ballentine wrote. “Evans is in a contract year, and with the Bucs drafting Emeka Egbuka and re-signing Chris Godwin, the Chargers would be a natural fit if Tampa Bay opts not to keep him.”
Could Mike Evans Be a Good Fit for the Chargers?
Evans has been one of the NFL’s most consistent receivers, recording 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons since entering the league in 2014, an NFL record. Last year, he hauled in 74 catches for 1,004 yards and 11 touchdowns. 
However, the big question is how much Evans will have left in the tank after next season. He turns 32 later this month, and although he was still productive in 2024, there are signs of decline, particularly in terms of injuries and overall production. He missed three games last year and posted a career-low 13.6 yards per catch.
The decision may ultimately hinge on what kind of contract Evans seeks in March, and also on how rookies like Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith perform for the Chargers this fall.
Los Angeles may still show interest in Evans, as he would be a strong veteran presence for Herbert, even if he’s not the same player he was a few years ago. However, the cost will certainly play a role, especially for a Chargers organization that isn’t known for big spending.
For now, the focus should likely be on the development of the Chargers’ younger pass-catchers.
