Browns HC Kevin Stefanski Provides Optimistic Injury Update on Dillon Gabriel
Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski gave a positive injury update on quarterback Dillon Gabriel earlier this week. 
The Browns’ quarterback situation became more intriguing after their first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers last Friday. As the team heads into the next week, fans received a Monday update on Gabriel’s injury status. Stefanski shared that the former third-round pick is expected to participate in 11-on-11 drills, which is a promising sign following his leg injury.
Gabriel entered the NFL with an impressive collegiate background, having passed for over 18,500 yards and 155 touchdowns during his six seasons with UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon. Known for his accuracy, he finished with a QBR of 160.6. His stellar career led Browns general manager Andrew Berry to select the 24-year-old quarterback in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
However, the quarterback situation became more complicated when the Browns also selected standout Shedeur Sanders from Colorado in the fifth round. While it’s not unusual for a team to draft multiple quarterbacks, the Browns had already traded for former first-round pick Kenny Pickett and signed veteran Joe Flacco earlier in the offseason. Despite having four quarterbacks on the roster, Cleveland kept all of them through training camp.
What This Means for Gabriel
Following Sanders’ standout performance in the first preseason game, the spotlight now shifts to Gabriel as the Browns prepare for their second preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Gabriel and Pickett were both sidelined in the previous game due to leg injuries, which allowed Sanders to play three quarters.
Throughout training camp, Gabriel appeared to be the third-string quarterback, which limited Sanders’ reps. Given that Sanders was the first QB selected, it made sense for him to get more opportunities. However, with Gabriel missing the first preseason game, the competition between him and Sanders may have narrowed.
Stefanski confirmed that Gabriel will play against the Eagles on Saturday but has yet to name a starter for the game. With Pickett still dealing with a hamstring injury, both Gabriel and Sanders are expected to see increased reps leading up to the second preseason game.
