Colin Cowherd Calls Out Shedeur Sanders Over Confrontation with Cleveland Host
Shedeur Sanders stirred up some buzz after confronting Cleveland radio host Tony Grossi following the Broncos’ preseason win over the Carolina Panthers. Now, Colin Cowherd has shared his thoughts on the matter.
Grossi had reportedly been critical of Sanders leading up to the game, so after Sanders’ standout performance, he sought out Grossi in the tunnel. The interaction, which was captured by Well Off Media (run by Deion Sanders Jr.), saw Sanders telling Grossi that he hoped to hear something positive from him post-game.
Cowherd weighed in on the situation during The Herd on Monday, saying:
“There’s a video of Shedeur Sanders confronting Tony Grossi after his first preseason game. It’s not hostile, but he does make a point. Grossi is a very well-known local host in Cleveland, and I think Shedeur is a good kid. But I do question his judgment and maturity. They laugh it off in the end, but still, I’m thinking, ‘Shedeur, what are you doing?’ Get out of there. You don’t need to be watching Tony Grossi TikTok clips.”
Despite Sanders’ controversial moment, Cowherd still praised the rookie quarterback for his performance in the 30-10 victory. With injuries to rookies Dillon Gabriel and veteran Kenny Pickett, Sanders had his shot to start, as Joe Flacco was given the day off. Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Before the game, there were reports that Sanders hadn’t received first-team reps during practice and had been throwing against equipment staffers at camp.
Although Sanders was considered a potential first-round pick, he dropped to the fifth round in the 2025 NFL Draft, and has faced heavy criticism before even making his debut. Cowherd speculated that some of that frustration might have played a role in his run-in with Grossi.
Still, Cowherd sees promise in Sanders’ ability, saying:
“I think his traits—his arm, size, and mobility—could make him a mid-tier NFL quarterback, like Dak Prescott. I think he throws a better ball than Dak, but he’s not on the level of guys like Cam Newton, Big Ben, Josh Allen, or Mahomes. He’ll need to improve in areas like maturity, focus, IQ, and pre-snap analysis to succeed. For example, Tom Brady had minimal physical traits but mastered the mental side of the game, which is why he’s the best. Dak Prescott isn’t great in some areas but excels in leadership and IQ. Sanders will need to be exceptional in those areas to rise in the NFL.”
Cowherd acknowledged Sanders’ accuracy, calling his ball placement excellent and easy to throw, but emphasized that he’ll need to work on the mental aspects of quarterback play to reach his potential.
