The New York Mets have made a significant move regarding Frankie Montas. On Tuesday, manager Carlos Mendoza announced that the struggling pitcher will be moved to the bullpen. Montas has had a rough start to his Mets career, with a 6.38 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and a .296 opponents’ batting average over 36.2 innings across seven starts and eight appearances.

Signed to a two-year, $34 million contract (with a player option for the second year) this past offseason, Montas has failed to live up to expectations. He didn’t debut until June 24 due to a right lat strain and has continued to struggle since. Over the weekend, the Mets experimented with Reed Garrett as an opener, followed by Montas to provide additional innings.

Now, Montas is officially being removed from the starting rotation, though the Mets haven’t yet decided who will replace him. Top prospects Nolan McLean and Brandon Sproat are among the options, with Mendoza confirming the new pitcher will get a longer look. Veteran Paul Blackburn, who is making a rehab start on Wednesday, won’t be considered for Montas’ spot on Saturday.
