Social Media Buzzes as UNM Men’s Basketball Fans React
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Pit was packed with hundreds of Lobo fans Sunday as they learned who their team would face in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
“I’m really happy because we worked hard for this, and we made it last year,” said Cam, a young UNM men’s basketball supporter.
Andrew McAuley, another fan, shared the optimism: “We’re feeling good about the Lobos’ chances this year after winning the Mountain West Conference regular-season championship.”
The tournament berth comes shortly after a tough semifinal loss to Boise State in the conference tournament. Despite the setback, UNM posted its best Mountain West record in program history, and fans are hopeful that momentum will carry into March Madness.
“I like the intensity we bring,” Cam said. “We have a lot of talented players, and I like how we play.”
“We made it this far, so we’re excited,” added Cody Runninghawk. “You have to support our Lobos.”
Last year, UNM’s return to the “Big Dance” — their first since 2014 — ended in a first-round loss to Clemson. Many fans believe this year’s squad could go further.
“We can make it past the first round, maybe even reach the Sweet 16,” McAuley predicted.
The Lobos enter the tournament as a No. 10 seed and will face Marquette in their first game later this week.
