Angels Re-Sign Veteran Pitcher Shaun Anderson After Recent Departure

The Los Angeles Angels have re-signed right-handed pitcher Shaun Anderson to a minor league deal, according to the team’s transaction log.

Anderson has made seven appearances for the Angels this season, throwing 11.1 innings and allowing 13 runs. He also surrendered six home runs and 20 total hits.

Just days ago, Anderson was designated for assignment, cleared waivers, and was sent to the minors. However, he opted to reject the assignment and declared free agency. This marks the third time Anderson has returned to the Angels after becoming a free agent. In his most recent outing, he allowed four runs, including home runs to Shohei Ohtani and Max Muncy, before being pulled after recording just two outs. He was subsequently designated for assignment.

At Triple-A Salt Lake, Anderson has pitched 81 innings, posting a 6.44 ERA and a 5.65 FIP.

With the Angels’ bullpen depth lacking, Anderson is expected to receive ample opportunities throughout the season, especially if injuries impact the pitching staff.

In spring training with the Angels, Anderson introduced a new pitch— a hybrid splitter/changeup, which he developed with guidance from other pitchers on the team. He discussed the pitch’s development with Jack Janes of The Sporting Tribune.

“I have a lot of pitches that I like, but it’s been eye-opening to work with guys like (Kyle) Hendricks, Kenley Jansen, and Tyler Anderson,” Anderson said. “I’m learning to simplify things, find my zones, and focus on throwing my pitches without overcomplicating it.”

He continued, “Instead of focusing on the movement, I’ve learned to just stay in my lane, throw the pitch, and stay through it, rather than trying to manipulate it like a two-seam. It’s helped me maintain better control and manage count leverage more effectively.”
