Houston Cougars Basketball to Host Exhibition Game Against Florida State Seminoles

The Houston Cougars will face the Florida State Seminoles for the sixth time in their history, marking their first matchup in over 50 years.

After narrowly missing out on a national championship this past April, falling just three points short against the Florida Gators, the Cougars are determined to bounce back and capture their first-ever national title. With one Florida team still fresh in their minds, they now turn their attention to another Florida rival, as the Seminoles from Tallahassee visit Houston for the first time since 1974.

The two teams will square off on December 6 at the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, as part of the Houston Hoops Showdown.

The Cougars had an impressive 35-5 record in the 2024-25 season, their 11th under head coach Kelvin Sampson, who has transformed the program into a powerhouse in men’s college basketball. Houston finished the season ranked No. 2 in the AP poll, winning both the Big 12 regular season and conference tournament titles.

After a 5-3 start to 2024, the Cougars embarked on a 13-game winning streak, including nine straight victories in conference play, which propelled them to No. 6 in the rankings before a February upset loss to No. 22 Texas Tech. The team then bounced back with an 18-game win streak, making a thrilling run through the NCAA Tournament. They edged past Purdue in the Sweet 16, defeated Tennessee 69-50 in the Elite 8, survived a close 70-67 game against Duke in the Final Four, and ultimately fell 65-63 to Florida in a heartbreaking national championship game.

Meanwhile, the Seminoles had a tougher season, losing 10 of their final 14 games and finishing with a 17-15 record. Their season ended with a loss to Syracuse in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
