Penguins Could Pursue Record-Breaking Deal for Connor McDavid if He Leaves the Oilers
Connor McDavid is entering the final year of his contract with the Edmonton Oilers, and while his current team remains the favorite to re-sign him, speculation about his future will only grow if contract talks drag on. 
Recently, Bleacher Report listed possible destinations for McDavid, with the Pittsburgh Penguins making the cut. Here’s why they might be a serious contender:
The Penguins have long been known for assembling top-tier talent, with legends like Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin gracing their roster over the years. Star power is in their DNA, and they could continue that tradition by adding McDavid to the mix.
Though the Penguins are in the early stages of a rebuild and may struggle in the 2025-26 season, general manager Kyle Dubas is determined to remain competitive as long as Crosby is playing. With a rapidly improving farm system and plenty of draft picks in the coming years, the Penguins have room to grow.
Additionally, with salary-cap flexibility (especially if they move Erik Karlsson), the Penguins could position themselves for a future that includes both Crosby and McDavid, at least for a few years before McDavid eventually takes the lead. While winning the Gavin McKenna lottery and building the team around him seems more likely, the idea of pairing Crosby and McDavid is certainly an exciting prospect.
A Crosby-McDavid duo would feel almost like a passing of the torch, from one top Canadian player to the next—a fitting way to transition to the next era of Penguins hockey.
For this to happen, the Penguins would need to demonstrate that they’re truly on the rise this season, or McDavid would likely avoid the risk of playing his prime years in a rebuilding team.
Money won’t be an issue for the Penguins, as they, like other teams, would offer McDavid a record-breaking contract. It would come down to the fit, and pairing McDavid with Crosby could form a thrilling and dynamic duo on the ice.
