Colts Veteran Expresses Frustration Over Ongoing QB Instability

It’s been a turbulent stretch for the Indianapolis Colts at the quarterback position, and that chaos doesn’t appear to be slowing down. On Tuesday morning, head coach Shane Steichen officially named Daniel Jones as the team’s starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins — making him the seventh different Week 1 starter for the Colts since 2018, the most in the NFL during that time.

While the organization is hopeful that Jones will finally bring some stability under center, years of constant change have taken a toll — both inside and outside the locker room. Veteran offensive lineman Quenton Nelson didn’t hold back when asked about the revolving door at quarterback.

“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t frustrating,” Nelson admitted. “You look around the league and see teams with guys like Patrick Mahomes, or other long-term quarterbacks, and the chemistry they build with their offensive line year after year — it’s a real advantage.”

For the Colts’ offensive line, building that same chemistry has been nearly impossible. Whether it’s been due to frequent QB changes or injury issues, the team hasn’t had the luxury of continuity at the most important position on the field. The Colts had high hopes that Anthony Richardson would become their long-term answer, but that plan has now been put on hold — or possibly abandoned — with Jones stepping in as the new leader.

This move essentially resets any progress made in developing cohesion between quarterback and line. While Jones has had time to work with the offense throughout training camp and the offseason, it still pales in comparison to what a multi-year starter would bring in terms of familiarity and rhythm.

Nelson, who has never truly experienced that kind of consistency himself, understands just how crucial it is for success up front and across the offense as a whole. Now, with Jones at the helm, the Colts begin again — hoping this decision brings more answers than questions.

Only time will tell if the Colts have finally landed on the right quarterback, or if next offseason will bring yet another change at the most critical spot on the roster.
