Stars-Flames Potential Blockbuster Trade Proposal Floated by Insider

A major trade between the Dallas Stars and Calgary Flames involving top defenseman Rasmus Andersson and elite winger Jason Robertson has been suggested.

During a July 15 appearance on B/R Open Ice, insider Frank Seravalli proposed the idea of the two teams exchanging high-caliber players to benefit both sides.

Andersson, a standout defenseman for the Flames, has been on the trade block since before last season’s deadline. With his contract expiring at the end of the upcoming season, Calgary is hoping to extend him, but there’s also a chance he could push for a move if talks stall.

On the other side, Robertson, who has been the subject of trade rumors for the Stars, may be moved due to cap issues. The 23-year-old winger is entering the final year of his deal and will be an RFA next summer, creating potential for Dallas to consider a trade before his contract status becomes more complicated.

Seravalli weighed in, saying:

“The Flames would love to get their hands on Robertson. I think a deal involving Rasmus Andersson would make a lot of sense. Dallas could be a great fit for him.”

Could It Be a Straight Swap?

Seravalli suggested the possibility of a direct, one-for-one trade—Andersson for Robertson. However, while this idea is intriguing, executing a straight swap could prove more difficult than it seems.

It’s likely that any potential trade could involve additional players or draft picks. Additionally, both players would need contract extensions with their new teams, or else there’s a risk of losing them for nothing after one season.

Why the Trade Makes Sense for Both Teams

This trade proposal makes sense for both teams’ needs. Andersson is a top-tier right-handed defenseman, and pairing him with Miro Heiskanen on Dallas’ top defensive pairing could make for one of the NHL’s best duos. Moreover, Andersson’s addition would help Dallas recover some of the offensive production they’d lose if Robertson were traded.

For Calgary, losing Andersson to free agency seems increasingly likely, so acquiring a player like Robertson would be a significant return. Since the departure of Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, the Flames have struggled to find elite scoring talent. Though Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau provide solid offensive contributions, they don’t offer the top-tier scoring needed for Calgary to compete in the Western Conference.

Landing Robertson could provide the Flames with the scoring boost they need to stay in playoff contention.

While this trade idea is intriguing, there’s no guarantee it will happen soon. With training camps still a few weeks away, fans may still have a chance to see a blockbuster trade before the season kicks off.
