What to Expect from Blake Lizotte in 2025-26?
Despite a third consecutive disappointing season for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2024-25, there were a few bright spots, including the standout performances of captain Sidney Crosby, wingers Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust, and several promising young prospects like Owen Pickering and Rutger McGroarty. Among these, Blake Lizotte, a 27-year-old forward, also made a quiet but impactful contribution. 
Signed to a two-year, $1.85 million annual deal by the Penguins in the summer of 2024, Lizotte arrived after six seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. Known for his speed, grit, and occasional offensive upside, Lizotte’s role with the Penguins was to be a reliable bottom-six forward. Although his season was marred by injuries early on, he managed to finish with 11 goals and 20 points in 59 games, a solid return for a player in a limited role. His best stretch came when he temporarily moved to the third-line center position in late November and December, where he scored five goals and nine points in just nine games. However, the Penguins quickly moved him back to his original role, and that’s where things stood for the rest of the season.
What to Expect in 2025-26
Heading into 2025-26, it’s unlikely that Lizotte will see much of a role beyond the fourth line, despite showing flashes of potential last season. With established forwards like Rust and Rakell still part of the team, the Penguins’ forward depth is crowded, leaving limited space for Lizotte to move up. Other players, such as Tommy Novak, Anthony Mantha, and Philip Tomasino, along with prospects like McGroarty and Koivunen, will likely get the opportunities for bigger roles.
The Bottom-Six Battle
As the Penguins prepare for training camp, the competition for bottom-six spots will be fierce, and Lizotte will likely retain his position as the fourth-line center. However, he could benefit from more dynamic linemates this season. Last year, Lizotte primarily played with players like Noel Acciari, Danton Heinen, and Kevin Hayes—none of whom are known for their speed, which is one of Lizotte’s strengths. Ideally, Lizotte would center a fast, energetic fourth line that is both defensively reliable and capable of creating offense on the rush.
If younger players force their way into the lineup during camp, management may be forced to move some of the older veterans, including potentially Lizotte. While Lizotte’s trade value is higher than some others in similar roles, his overall value to the Penguins may lead them to keep him around, especially if they seek more stability in their bottom-six forward group.
Possible Trade Scenarios
The Penguins have been open to trades this offseason as they work to retool their roster, with high-profile names like Bryan Rust, Erik Karlsson, and Rickard Rakell often mentioned in rumors. Given that the team could make changes to their depth players, Lizotte might find himself in trade discussions, whether during the offseason or throughout the season.
If Lizotte does remain with the team, he could have a strong chance to form a more consistent line with players who complement his style. His chemistry with Dewar last season was noticeable, and the addition of free-agent energy player Justin Brazeau could further enhance the fourth line. The possibility of other players like Tomasino or Hallander dropping down to the fourth line could also give Lizotte better offensive support.
Looking Ahead
Overall, Lizotte should be in a better position this season with more consistent linemates and a clearer role. His health will be key, as he was on pace for a solid 16-goal, 28-point season before injuries hampered him last year. While his primary strengths—penalty killing, blocking shots, and playing responsible defense—will remain key parts of his game, the hope is that a stronger, faster fourth line will allow Lizotte to elevate his offensive game and make a more consistent impact for the Penguins.
