East Carolina’s Katin Houser Aims to Prove Military Bowl Performance Wasn’t a Fluke
Ahead of this week’s rematch with NC State, Katin Houser has a chance to prove his standout performance in the Military Bowl wasn’t a one-time occurrence.
When East Carolina faced the Wolfpack in December, Houser struggled, throwing for just 147 yards and two interceptions. But with the new season underway, he’s focused on improving and showing he can perform at a higher level.
Facing New Challenges
This time, Houser won’t face the same defensive scheme he saw in December. With the hiring of defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot, the Wolfpack will bring new defensive looks, forcing Houser to adapt quickly.
Houser’s Background
Houser was a highly-rated four-star recruit out of St. John Bosco, where he stood out by completing 65% of his passes for 1,408 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior year. He was a finalist in the prestigious Elite 11 quarterback competition and helped lead his high school team to a 10-2 record.
He initially committed to Michigan State, where his first season saw limited playing time—just six snaps against Akron. However, in his second year (2023), Houser played in 11 games, passing for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns.
Looking for a fresh start, Houser transferred to East Carolina, but didn’t initially take over as the starting quarterback. Jake Garcia was named starter, but Houser earned the job midway through the season.
From there, Houser led the Pirates to a 5-2 record, culminating in a Military Bowl appearance. In his seven starts, he accounted for 2,176 all-purpose yards and averaged 241.8 yards of total offense per game.
Looking Ahead to 2025
Heading into the 2025 season, Houser is focused on taking his game to the next level. With most of his receiving corps returning and new weapons added to the offense, he’s set to showcase his skills and improve on his impressive stats. According to Pro Football Focus, Houser also made 19 “Big Time Throws” last season, highlighting his ability to make precise, high-impact passes. For comparison, last season’s starter, CJ Bailey, had just 14.
Now, Houser is hoping to build on his strong finish to 2024 and lead East Carolina to greater success in 2025.
