Cardinals-Braves Summer Trade: Clear Winner Emerges
The St. Louis Cardinals already appear to have made the right move.
After weeks of speculation, the Cardinals decided to shake up their starting rotation ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline. Fans had been urging the team to part ways with struggling veteran starter Erick Fedde. On July 23rd, St. Louis designated him for assignment, and just a few days later, on July 27th, they traded him to the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later and cash considerations.
Now, about a month later, it’s clear who won the trade. Fedde made five appearances for the Braves, including four starts, but posted a disappointing 8.10 ERA. On Sunday, the Braves released him.
The Cardinals’ Decision Proves to Be the Right One
“The Braves today recalled RHP Wander Suero and RHP Hunter Stratton to Atlanta, placed LHP Aaron Bummer on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation, and released RHP Erick Fedde from the roster,” the Braves announced.
While the Cardinals didn’t get much in return for Fedde, they managed to offload him before his struggles worsened. He had a 5.22 ERA in 20 starts for St. Louis earlier in the season. In contrast, Fedde had a respectable 3.72 ERA in 10 starts with the Cardinals last year after being traded from the Chicago White Sox, where he posted a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts.
St. Louis acquired Fedde last summer as part of their push for a playoff spot. He was under team control for 2025 and came at a reasonable price. However, after missing the playoffs in 2024, the Cardinals decided to move on from him.
Though the Cardinals’ rotation still has some uncertainties, especially with Miles Mikolas, their decision to part ways with Fedde now looks like the right one, especially after the Braves decided to cut ties with him.
