Brent Pry Responds to Caleb Woodson’s DWI Charge and Disciplinary Actions
Earlier today, reports confirmed that Virginia Tech linebacker Caleb Woodson was arrested over the weekend on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. Head coach Brent Pry addressed the situation during his Tuesday press conference.
When asked about the incident, Pry acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and shared that internal discussions have taken place regarding disciplinary steps. He emphasized that the consequences would involve not just the football program, but also the university and athletic department policies.
“Obviously, this is a very serious situation,” Pry said. “There have been a number of conversations over the past few days. There are internal consequences, and we’re fully committed to following through with the university and athletic department procedures.”
One immediate repercussion for Woodson was the loss of his newly earned team captain status. Pry noted that Woodson could potentially regain that role, but his recent actions didn’t reflect the standards expected of a team leader.
“We removed his captain title—with a chance to earn it back,” Pry explained.
Court records show Woodson was arrested Saturday for DWI, a Class 1 misdemeanor. This marks his second driving-related offense in less than a month; he was also cited for reckless driving on July 30. Virginia Tech released a brief statement saying: “We are aware of an incident involving Caleb Woodson. We take this matter seriously and will handle it according to athletic department and university policy. As this is a legal matter, we will have no further comment until the process is complete.”
Woodson is entering his third season with the Hokies and has been a key contributor on defense. Over his 26 appearances (including 12 starts), he’s recorded 94 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, two sacks, two pass breakups, and an interception. Last season alone, he posted 72 tackles and was recognized as a Preseason Fourth Team All-ACC selection by Phil Steele.
Despite his strong on-field resume, Woodson’s off-field issues have put his immediate playing status in doubt. Coach Pry has yet to confirm whether he’ll suit up for Virginia Tech’s season opener against No. 13 South Carolina.
“As far as his availability this weekend, that decision hasn’t been made yet,” Pry stated.
