Blues Remain Connected to Sabres Defenseman

The St. Louis Blues continue to be linked to Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram. Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic recently reported that, although trade talks between the two teams cooled prior to Byram re-signing with Buffalo, the connection hasn’t disappeared. “All it takes is a phone call,” Rutherford noted.

While this may seem speculative, there’s a notable history between the Blues and Sabres. The two franchises completed a blockbuster deal seven years ago when St. Louis acquired Ryan O’Reilly in exchange for a package that included Tage Thompson, Vladimir Sobotka, Patrik Berglund, and two draft picks—used to select Ryan Johnson and Colin Miller.

The Blues have shown they’re not afraid to act decisively. Last season, they used their cap space strategically, acquiring Phillip Broberg and Dylan Holloway from Edmonton through offer sheets. GM Doug Armstrong has proven he’s willing to move quickly if the right opportunity arises.

Buffalo’s GM Kevyn Adams also isn’t closing the door on trade possibilities. “We believe Bo is a great player who can help us win,” Adams said. “But if there’s a deal that improves our roster, we’re open to it. We’re not in a rush to move him for futures.”

Byram’s Negotiation Saga

Byram’s contract discussions with the Sabres were rocky, fueling speculation that a trade was imminent. While several teams, including the Blues, were rumored to be interested, Byram ultimately signed a two-year deal with Buffalo. However, the short term of the contract suggests he may be eyeing free agency sooner than later—keeping trade rumors alive.

The Sabres are under pressure to make changes after 14 consecutive seasons without a playoff berth, while the Blues are looking to add key pieces to remain competitive.

Kyrou’s Name Still Circulating

On the Blues’ side, forward Jordan Kyrou continues to appear in trade chatter. Rutherford noted that “clubs still like Kyrou,” and earlier reports tied him to the Montreal Canadiens. While talks quieted after the Blues traded Zac Bolduc to Montreal for Logan Mailloux, interest in Kyrou hasn’t disappeared.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli recently stated that St. Louis is “very motivated” to move Kyrou’s contract, which carries a $8.125 million cap hit through 2030-31. Kyrou had a strong season with 70 points (36 goals, 34 assists), ranking second in team scoring.

If the Blues move Kyrou, they’ll likely seek NHL-ready talent in return. It’s possible we could see a deal in the future involving Kyrou and Byram switching teams—if one of those phone calls happens.
