Deion Sanders Shares Plan for 5-Star QB Julian Lewis

The Colorado Buffaloes have named Kaidon Salter as their starting quarterback for their Week One matchup against Georgia Tech at Folsom Field. However, the spotlight remains on freshman Julian Lewis—one of the top prospects in the 2025 class. Could Coach Deion Sanders be preparing to give the young quarterback some playing time this season?

Although Lewis won’t be starting the season opener, it’s clear that Colorado sees a bright future for the 6-foot-1, 190-pound signal caller out of Carrollton, Georgia. Rated as a four-star recruit and ranked the No. 10 quarterback nationally by 247Sports, Lewis is the highest-ranked recruit in Sanders’s 2025 class.

At Big 12 Media Days earlier this summer, Sanders addressed questions about Lewis, offering praise for the freshman.

“JuJu is coming around the mountain when he comes. And I love him, I love what he brings to the table,” Sanders said.

Following the announcement of Salter as the starter, Sanders elaborated further on the potential for Lewis to see the field.

“We’re praying and hoping that you see some JuJu periodically during the game,” he said. “We want to get him some reps, but it all depends on how the game plays out.”

While it makes sense for the Buffaloes to begin the season with the more experienced Salter, there’s still a possibility that Lewis could be worked into the game plan. On3 reporter Pete Nakos noted that a platoon-style approach isn’t out of the question.

“Sources have recently told On3 it would not be surprising if Colorado employs some type of platoon situation with Julian Lewis getting a few drives per game,” Nakos posted on social media.

If implemented, such a strategy could disrupt Salter’s rhythm, but it also offers a way to test Lewis without overwhelming him. Should Salter falter and Lewis proves ready, Colorado might hand him more responsibilities. Still, the coaching staff is expected to prioritize his long-term development over short-term gains, knowing that Lewis is likely their quarterback of the future once Salter moves on.
