Blockbuster Trade Proposal Sends 83-Point Forward to NY Rangers
The New York Rangers are heading into the upcoming season looking to add more offensive depth—especially after the departure of longtime winger Chris Kreider. With no obvious replacement within the organization, the Rangers may look to the trade market for help. 
One possible target? Martin Necas.
Necas has been surrounded by trade rumors all offseason. After being moved from the Carolina Hurricanes to the Colorado Avalanche in the Mikko Rantanen deal, reports emerged suggesting Necas is unhappy in Colorado. With just one year left on his current contract, the Avalanche may not commit to a long-term extension—opening the door for a potential trade.
That’s where the Rangers could step in.

This proposed deal likely wouldn’t cost the Rangers any key roster players—unless Colorado pushes for someone like Taylor Raddysh or Adam Edstrom. More realistically, Colorado would benefit from cap relief and future assets, including a prospect like Berard and a valuable first-round pick that could either be used directly or flipped in another deal.
Why Necas Fits the Rangers
Necas posted an impressive 83-point season split between Carolina and Colorado, and at just 26 years old, he’s still in his prime with room to grow. He’d easily fit into the Rangers’ top-six forward group and could immediately contribute on the second line—or even the top line if needed.
Under head coach Mike Sullivan, Necas would give the Rangers a versatile scoring threat who can play in multiple situations. If he stays healthy and performs well, another 80-point season—or even pushing toward 100 points—isn’t out of the question.
Free Agency Could Complicate the Deal
One concern for New York is that Necas is set to become a free agent in 2026. If no extension is agreed upon, the Rangers risk acquiring him as a short-term rental.
While they could attempt to negotiate an extension as part of the trade, it’s unclear whether Necas would be open to that. Reports suggest he may want to test free agency, which could make the Rangers hesitant to give up high-value assets without contract certainty.
Still, if the Rangers are in position to make a serious playoff push, the potential short-term gain could outweigh the long-term risk. They might take the chance and work on a new deal with Necas later.
