Texas Tech’s Week One Victory: What Made It So Dominant?
Texas Tech kicked off its season in commanding fashion, steamrolling Arkansas-Pine Bluff 67-7. It was the first chance to see the Red Raiders’ $20 million roster in action—and unfortunately for UAPB, they were the first to feel its full force. The blowout could’ve been even worse if head coach Joey McGuire hadn’t turned to the backups or if a weather delay hadn’t interrupted the third quarter.
Still, almost everything clicked for Tech. The offense was sharp and efficient, and the defense lived up to the preseason expectations.
Offensive Precision 
It’s expected for Power Four programs to overpower FCS opponents, but Texas Tech didn’t just dominate—they did so with precision. Quarterback Behren Morton had an outstanding night, completing 16 of 18 passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns. His 89% completion rate and 256 passer rating spoke to both accuracy and decision-making. Even more encouraging was his distribution—12 different receivers caught passes, with no one hauling in more than four.
Backup QB Will Hammond kept the momentum going, finishing 7-for-9 with 92 yards and a touchdown, plus a 64-yard rushing TD on his only carry. His passer rating was an impressive 200.3.
On the ground, Tech’s run game was just as explosive. Cameron Dickey ran for 90 yards and a score on 12 carries, Adam Hill had 78 yards on eight, and J’Koby Williams added 56 yards and a touchdown on just six attempts. All three averaged over seven yards per carry, showing depth and efficiency in the backfield.
While a game like this doesn’t reveal many weaknesses, it made one thing clear: Texas Tech’s strengths—especially offensive balance and defensive reliability—are very real. If they maintain this level of execution, they’ll be a tough team to stop.
