Carson Beck’s Comments on CJ Carr After the Notre Dame–Miami Thriller
Miami and Carson Beck narrowly edged out Notre Dame in a thrilling season opener. Notre Dame’s campaign began Sunday night with a tough 27-24 defeat against Miami, as they were outperformed for much of the game. It was also the first college start for Notre Dame’s quarterback CJ Carr. Although the play calling seemed cautious and somewhat protective early on, Carr sparked a late comeback, helping the Fighting Irish tie the game at 24-24. Unfortunately, Notre Dame failed to stop Miami on the final drive, and the Hurricanes secured a 27-24 victory with a 47-yard field goal in the closing minutes.

Following the intense finish, Carson Beck spoke with sideline reporter Molly McGrath on ESPN/ABC. When asked about Miami’s win and his transfer from Georgia, Beck also unexpectedly praised Notre Dame and CJ Carr, saying, “CJ Carr played an outstanding game and competed hard for them. They have the potential for a great season and many wins.”

The cautious strategy with CJ Carr early in the game was expected but lasted too long. Once Notre Dame began to push the ball downfield, the offense opened up considerably. Although the loss is disappointing and Carr made some mistakes, his potential as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback looks very promising. His football intelligence is top-tier, and his willingness to take physical risks, as seen Sunday, will inspire his teammates to play harder. The main frustration after Sunday’s loss lies more with the game plan and play calling than with Carr himself. While quick improvements are necessary before the upcoming game against Texas A&M, Carr’s future at Notre Dame looks exceptionally bright — and not just in a year or two, but much sooner.
