Saints Criticized Over $24.5 Million Alvin Kamara Contract

With the New Orleans Saints struggling this season — especially after franchise quarterback Derek Carr retired earlier in the summer — there’s growing scrutiny over the team’s decisions, including one involving their longtime star running back.

Spencer Rattler has taken over as the starter, backed up by rookie Tyler Shough, but neither has impressed so far. While there are still a few standouts on the roster, frustration continues to build — and now even Alvin Kamara, one of the team’s most consistent performers, is facing criticism.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon recently took aim at Kamara’s two-year, $24.5 million contract extension, calling him one of the most overpaid running backs in the NFL.

“Kamara’s had a great career, but he’s set to count nearly $16.2 million against the cap in 2025 for a team that’s no longer a contender,” Gagnon wrote. “Cutting him next offseason would still cost them $18.3 million. He’s on the wrong side of 30 and has only 18 touchdowns over the past three years. Why did they give him this deal last fall?”

Despite the criticism, Kamara remains the focal point of the Saints’ offense and arguably their most valuable player. While it’s fair to question the long-term value of a high-priced contract for an aging running back, Kamara isn’t exactly breaking the bank — especially when compared to top salaries at the position. And unlike many players labeled “overpaid,” Kamara is still producing.

The Saints have bigger problems than Kamara, and if he continues to play at a high level this season, he may silence the doubts about his value. For now, he’s still the centerpiece of an offense trying to find its identity.
