Cincinnati Linebacker Jake Golday Earns First Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Honor

CINCINNATI — After a standout showing in Week 1, Cincinnati linebacker Jake Golday has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Golday was a bright spot in UC’s hard-fought 20-17 loss to Nebraska, tallying a career-high 12 tackles, one sack, and one tackle for loss. His high-energy performance helped anchor a defense that was on the field for most of the game, as Nebraska dominated time of possession with 78 offensive snaps to Cincinnati’s 57.

“That was one of the louder stadiums I’ve played a game in,” said head coach Scott Satterfield after the game. “It definitely affected us offensively. But I’m proud of our guys — they fought, they were flying around, playing physical. I’m especially proud of our defense.”

Satterfield emphasized the challenge of defending for over 40 minutes, especially against highly-touted Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola.

“He’s a really good player,” Satterfield continued. “He had 40 minutes to work with and still only managed 20 points — and seven of those came after a turnover gave them a short field. That says a lot about how well our defense played.”

Golday, who was also named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week last season following a strong game against UCF, continues to emerge as one of the Bearcats’ top defensive players and a key leader heading into the rest of the season.
