Louisville Football Injury Report: Jeff Brohm Provides Key Updates Ahead of Week 2

The Louisville Cardinals kicked off their season in dominant fashion, racking up 51 points in a blowout win over Eastern Kentucky. But while the scoreboard showed plenty of positives, head coach Jeff Brohm didn’t escape the opener without facing some injury concerns.

As the team shifts its focus to Week 2, Brohm offered updates on several key players, including defensive back Rodney Johnson, tight end Nate Kurisky, and offensive tackle Trevonte Sylvester.

Rodney Johnson Expected Back

Brohm sounded optimistic about Johnson’s status moving forward.

“I think Rodney will be back for sure,” Brohm said.

Johnson, a transfer from Southern University, exited the game with an apparent ankle injury. The expectation is that he’ll play a significant role in the Cardinals’ defense this year, and it appears he’s trending toward being available for the next game.

Kurisky, Sylvester Likely to Miss Week 2

However, the outlook is less certain for two other contributors.

“Nate had an injury in fall camp. I’m not sure if he’ll be ready to go, which we would like to get him back,” Brohm noted. “Then Trevonte probably will not be back for this game as well. He was out this last game, our starting tackle on offense.”

Kurisky, a redshirt junior tight end, is recovering from a hand injury. Last season, he ranked second among Louisville tight ends with 12 catches for 112 yards and three touchdowns. His absence would be a noticeable hit to the passing game.

Sylvester, a redshirt senior and starting offensive tackle, is dealing with an undisclosed injury. Now in his third season with Louisville, he’s played in 24 games and was a key piece of last year’s line, allowing just one sack all season. His absence is a concern for the offensive front.

Other Missing Players Remain Question Marks

Louisville was also without offensive lineman Victor Cutler and edge rusher C.J. May in Week 1. However, Brohm did not offer updates on their statuses during Monday’s availability.

Next Up: A Tough Test vs. James Madison

The Cardinals will host James Madison next, a formidable opponent from the Sun Belt Conference. The Dukes are considered potential contenders for the Group of Five spot in the College Football Playoff discussion, making this a game Louisville can’t afford to overlook. Brohm will be hoping to get as close to full strength as possible for the matchup.

Saban Believes in Brohm-Moss Duo

Expectations for Louisville are gaining national traction—even legendary coach Nick Saban is paying attention. He recently praised the pairing of head coach Jeff Brohm and quarterback Miller Moss, calling it a potentially explosive combination.

“Miller Moss ends up at Louisville with Jeff Brohm, which is going to be a lethal combination because of the way he uses quarterbacks and Miller’s ability,” Saban said. “This is going to be fantastic.”

Saban added that he believes Louisville could be a serious contender this season.

“They’ve got a good football team, and with all the changes—new leadership, cultural shifts—it feels like they’ve got a real shot. But you never know.”
