Underrated Ravens DB Could Be a Game-Changer This Season

One of the Baltimore Ravens’ under-the-radar free agent additions could turn out to be a pivotal piece for their defense in 2025.

While much of the offseason focus has been on the Ravens’ aggressive approach to roster building—especially the overhaul of their secondary—the team quietly made several moves that could pay off in a big way. Baltimore is clearly in win-now mode, and every roster decision has reflected that urgency.

The headline addition to the defensive backfield was former All-Pro corner Jaire Alexander, a high-profile signing who reunites with his former college teammate Lamar Jackson. Alexander brings star power and proven talent to an already strong cornerback unit that includes Marlon Humphrey and first-round pick Nate Wiggins.

However, Alexander’s arrival has somewhat overshadowed another savvy acquisition: veteran corner Chidobe Awuzie, who signed a one-year deal worth $1.3 million. While not as flashy, Awuzie could be one of the most valuable depth pieces on Baltimore’s defense.

Chidobe Awuzie: A Low-Cost, High-Upside Move

Awuzie joins the Ravens with eight years of NFL experience and a track record of consistent contributions. He’s started 81 of the 94 games he’s played across stints with the Cowboys, Bengals, and Titans, and he’s known for his smart, physical play in coverage.

As noted by Connor Burke of The Ebony Raven, Awuzie offers a strong insurance policy behind Alexander and Wiggins. Given Alexander’s recent injury history, having a reliable backup with starting experience could prove crucial.

“The Ravens may lean heavily on Alexander this year opposite Wiggins, but with his health always a question mark, Awuzie could offer strong play if called upon,” Burke wrote.

Health the Biggest Question

Injuries have been the main obstacle in Awuzie’s career. He’s battled multiple setbacks, including an ACL tear, which have limited his availability at times. But when healthy, he has shown he can compete at a high level — and now finds himself in a role where he won’t be asked to carry the load.

As a potential CB3 on the depth chart, Awuzie’s experience and versatility could give the Ravens elite depth at the position — an area that proved costly for them in previous seasons when injuries struck.

While it’s still unclear if Awuzie will be active for Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills, a healthy season in a rotational role could solidify his value and further strengthen one of the most stacked defenses in the league.

Bottom line: If Awuzie stays healthy, he might just be one of the smartest signings of the Ravens’ offseason — a low-profile move that could help push Baltimore’s defense to the next level.
