North Carolina Snags JB Shabazz From Tennessee Football

JB Shabazz announced on Thursday that he will be flipping his commitment from the Tennessee Volunteers to the North Carolina Tar Heels, adding to UNC’s impressive 2026 recruiting class. North Carolina has been making significant strides in recruiting, landing several high-profile prospects for the class, positioning themselves as a top contender in the national recruiting race.

Before Thursday’s commitment, the Tar Heels had secured 36 commitments, which ranks them among the best in the 2026 class. This success is especially notable under the leadership of head coach Bill Belichick, who, despite his NFL background, has shown strong recruiting skills in college football.

On Thursday, the Tar Heels boosted their recruiting efforts with Shabazz’s commitment, bringing their total to 37. The move is part of a broader trend of North Carolina flipping high-profile players, including this recent pickup from the SEC.

Shabazz Flips from Tennessee to North Carolina

Shabazz, a 6-foot-7, 315-pound offensive tackle from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, had initially committed to Tennessee over South Carolina. He is considered a top-tier prospect, ranking as the 7th-best commit in the 2026 class by Rivals and the 20th-best by 247Sports. His decision to flip to UNC is a big win for the Tar Heels, continuing a pattern of successful flips from Tennessee, who had previously been leading in the recruiting battle for several players.

Shabazz joins former Tennessee commitment Carson Sneed, who also flipped to North Carolina earlier, joining his brother, Date, who had transferred from Tennessee to UNC. This growing trend of players flipping from the Volunteers to the Tar Heels under Belichick’s staff reflects a shift in momentum, with North Carolina gaining ground after Tennessee had initially been a stronger competitor for some of these top recruits.
