Saints Sign Brahmas EDGE Garrett Nelson to Practice Squad
As the NFL season kicks off, UFL talent continues to make its way to the big league. San Antonio Brahmas edge rusher Garrett Nelson has been added to the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad after an impressive preseason showing with the Denver Broncos.
Nelson has spent the past two seasons in the UFL with the Brahmas, where he was the only returning edge rusher for the 2025 season following a standout 2024 campaign. In 2024, he recorded 13 tackles, two tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. He earned high marks from Pro Football Focus (PFF), with a defensive grade of 86.0 and a pass-rushing grade of 82.2, making him one of the top performers on the team.
This past UFL season, Nelson was part of a revamped defensive rotation in San Antonio. Despite the changes, he still managed to tally 12 tackles, 13 quarterback pressures, and started in six of the eight games he played. His defensive grade for the season was 70.7, according to PFF.
Nelson was then picked up by the Denver Broncos, where he delivered a solid preseason performance, posting six tackles, four quarterback pressures, and three defensive stops in three games. He finished with a respectable 76.1 defensive grade from PFF.
Originally expected to land on the Broncos’ practice squad, Nelson has now joined the Saints. New Orleans has been actively targeting UFL talent this offseason, with Renegades defensive back Jayden Price already on their practice squad and Stallions offensive lineman Barry Wesley on IR after an impressive preseason. The addition of Nelson comes as no surprise, especially with former Seattle Sea Dragons GM Randy Mueller now involved in the Saints’ personnel decisions.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that the Saints recently worked out Michigan Panthers defensive end Kenny Willekes earlier this week.
